Amazon Announces New Kindle for Only $80

As Amazon continues to push its Kindle products in competition with Apple’s iPads, it has officially announced one of the most consumer-friendly tablet prices in the market.

The company announced a redesigned base model for the Kindle e-reader on Wednesday. The model will feature a lighter design while also including 512MB of memory, doubling the 256MB of memory in the previous model.

How much will this new base model Kindle cost you? Only $79.99. For those who are picky about their color choices, the model will also come in white.

The new kindle is the first redesign of Kindle in two years, but it won’t be the only Kindle product in the line of 8th-generation models. Amazon has also released the Kindle Oasis, which starts at $290 and comes with a leather charging cover while featuring a high-resolution 300 ppi display with an all-new design that makes it the thinnest and lightest Kindle ever.

The first Kindle debuted in November of 2007, with the first listing price at $399. Over the years, the prices have continued to drop, even with the Kindle Fire, which is a more direct competitor to the iPad with access to movies, music and games instead of only books.

The newest Kindle will be released on July 7th and could possibly take a share of the tablet market away from Apple. A new iPad will cost you between $269-$1,099 depending on the model, so for those who want a tablet just for reading and are concerned about price, the Kindle will be a more appealing option.
