LEGO has plans of going green with their bricks, but how green are they planning on going? Here are the company’s plans to go big on the environment.

LEGO has big plans when it comes to the company next year. Even though the primary ingredient in their product is plastic, the company believes they can contribute to the betterment of the environment. CBC reports that LEGO is adding some sustainably-sourced pieces in their playsets in the future.

While many celebrated that the company was changing its ways to suit a need in the environment, others wondered what this could mean for the quality of the product And what are sustainably-sourced LEGO pieces?

These new pieces come from polyethylene, a plant-based plastic made from a byproduct of sugar cane. The bio-based plastic is not biodegradable, even though it stems from a plant.

Matthew Whitby, a spokesperson from Lego, reveals the new plan is to make the bricks more sustainable. The plan is to make LEGO durable and reused over generations.

“Children and parents will not notice any difference in the quality or appearance of the new elements, because plant-based polyethylene has the same properties as conventional polyethylene,” said Tim Brooks, Lego’s corporate responsibility vice-president.

However, there’s still a long way to go to make every LEGO piece more environmentally friendly. Of the 19 billion Lego pieces produced each year, less than two percent of the plastic Lego manufactures will be made from polyethylene. When put in those terms, it doesn’t seem like a lot.

But the company has revealed that they are also planning on reducing packaging waste and overall waste from factories, store, and warehouses by 2030.

The World Wildlife Fund supports the company’s plan in changing things around for the betterment of the environment, so this news shoulds like a great Christmas idea for those LEGO builders, who also care for the environment.

What do you think of the company’s new plan?
