Netflix Acquires Rights to Stream “The People V. O.J. Simpson”

Over the years, Netflix has acquired the rights to stream some of the most popular shows on television, and they just got another big title that subscribers are certain to be interested in.

According to Joe Flint from The Wall Street Journal, Netflix has acquired the streaming rights to “The People V. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story”. The hit show aired on FX early in 2016 with 10 episodes and was nominated for 22 Emmy awards thanks to the help of some prestigious actors, producers and writers.

The show starred a number of big names, including Cuba Gooding Jr. as O.J. Simpson, John Travolta as Robert Shapiro, David Schwimmer as Robert Kardashian and Sarah Paulson as Marcia Clark.

As cable companies continue to struggle with the exploding online streaming market, they are forced more and more to give the streaming rights of their shows to big platforms like Netflix and Hulu. While these companies are making cable companies progressively more obsolete, they are still able to make money off of the streaming rights, especially with big titles like “Breaking Bad” or “Sons of Anarchy”, which AMC and FX have allowed to be streamed on Netflix.

Still, companies aren’t too thrilled with having to give streaming rights. Back in August of 2015, FX Networks President John Landgraf said that he’d “Prefer not to have sold any of our content to Netflix.”

Regardless of cable executives’ feelings about online streaming, the fact is that companies like Netflix and Hulu are here to stay.

“The People V. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story” will debut on Netflix at some point in 2017.
