Starbucks is really stepping up their special edition drinks game with the limited-time-only Unicorn Frappuccino. If you were not aware, unicorn-themed food and drink is, apparently, a trend. Available for five days at participating stores, the drink sounds and looks like something out of a My Little Pony fever dream. The press release Starbucks issued is equally inspired:
The elusive unicorn from medieval legend has been making a comeback. Once only found in enchanted forests, unicorns have been popping up in social media with shimmering unicorn-themed food and drinks. Now Starbucks is taking the trend to a new level with its first Unicorn Frappuccino® blended beverage, available starting Wednesday, April 19, through Sunday, April 23, while supplies last.
If you were wondering what flavor “Unicorn” evokes, that would be a blended crème base with mango syrup that apparently tastes like sour raspberry. Pink powder gives the drink its (eventual) color and a sour blue drizzle completes the look. Starbucks promises your first taste will be sweet and fruity, but if you stir the drink, the color changes from purple to pink and the taste becomes tangy and tart. According to Starbucks, “the more swirl, the more the beverage’s color and flavors transform.”
Instagram and Twitter, so far, are totally onboard, but Reddit has been a little more reserved, as users have posted throughout what appears to be a soft roll-out. While the drink has a certain visual – or at least ‘grammable – appeal, the reviews of the actual taste include the phrases “horrible sour syrup” and “just like those tropical Skittles.”
Whether you love unicorns, sour raspberry or magic tricks in a cup, there are plenty of reasons to try the latest limited edition Starbucks drink. That said, there are just as many reasons to check it out on social media instead.
