Watch kid open his elaborate Lego safe

A Canadian boy created a puzzle box to store his money that shows you don’t have to be a master Lego builder to create complex sets.

In the video, which appears to have originated on boingboing and has made the rounds on Reddit, the boy slowly modifies an intricate tower of bricks step-by-step until he reveals it was a safe for a small stash of paper money. Over the course of three minutes, the boy pushes, pulls and slides different pieces, revealing keys and cranks and other parts of the puzzle. Finally, he pulls out a small box that contains a Canadian $20 bill.

Lego safes and puzzle boxes have long been popular, offering a different kind of challenge from your standard construction build sets. You can even create a Lego Rubik’s cube or make the box in the bricks of the same color for an added challenge. If you’re interested in making your own Lego safe, you can find tutorials and instructions easy enough. It clearly takes patience and a good memory, but if you’re up for it, it could make an interesting statement piece.

However, as Reddit was quick to point out, you really must remember the structure is more of a puzzle box than a safe. If you have anything truly valuable, it’s best to use something more secure, lest you lose your valuables and find your puzzle box shattered on the floor.

That said, if you really want to secure your savings in a Lego safe, you might be wise to follow a different model. For example, a 14 lb. safe with glued pieces, motion detecting alarm and five double-digit codes.

The Canadian boy’s certainly looks more fun.
