Dollar Tree May Be Cheap, but These Items Are Worth Buying Somewhere Else

A dollar looks hard to beat when you’re filling a cart, but a low price only works out if the item does its job. Across eight categories, from chef’s knives and can openers to extension cords and children’s toys, shopping experts say Dollar Tree and other dollar stores can leave you with something that breaks, underperforms, or raises safety questions. Here’s where spending a little more elsewhere may pay off.

A Chef’s Knife That Dulls Fast

Start with the chef’s knife. In the experience of Simply Recipes’ shopping expert, the steel on Dollar Tree knives dulls quickly and can’t be sharpened properly afterward. Dull steel makes you lean on the knife, and that pressure can cause slips and accidents. It also crushes and tears herbs and produce, which can shorten shelf life and affect texture. A good knife from a reputable brand can last a lifetime.

Black Plastic Utensils

Black plastic utensils deserve a second look. Some black plastics contain toxic brominated flame retardants that may be harmful, according to a peer-reviewed study. That matters for spatulas, ladles, and even spoons and forks. The Dollar Tree versions are thin and flimsy, bend under pressure, and can start to melt in high heat. Silicone, wooden, or stainless steel utensils work better, and decent ones turn up at Dollar Tree itself.

Can Openers That Give Out

Dollar Tree’s Cooking Concepts can opener tends to wear out fast. After a few uses, the handles can slip off or snap, and the mechanism often quits, so the handle spins without turning the blade. It can leave a half-opened can and a lifted, jagged lid, a real cutting hazard. Two or three replacements cost more than a decent manual opener, which Simply Recipes put at $8 to $10.

Foil and Plastic Wrap

Dollar Tree’s foil runs thinner than name brands, so it rips constantly and won’t stay put on sheet pans. The plastic wrap sticks to itself more than to anything you’re covering. Some discount wraps may contain phthalates and bisphenol S (BPS), which are linked to hormone disruption, a concern that grows when the wrap touches warm, acidic, or fatty foods. A name brand costing a dollar or two more is worth it.

Anything With a Plug

Skip anything with a plug. Elisabella Ricca, a personal finance and consumer analyst at TopCashback.com, says dollar store phone chargers and headphones often don’t last as long as higher-quality options. They may also charge more slowly or be more prone to breaking. Wise Bread adds that the UL safety seal is often counterfeited, so there’s no sure way to know whether night lights or extension cords meet minimum safety requirements.

Food and Drink for Kids

The New York attorney general’s office found that Dollar Tree continued to sell recalled, lead-contaminated applesauce pouches for children. The retailer paid penalties under a January 2026 settlement. Juice is another one to watch. Consumer Reports tested 45 popular fruit juices and found elevated levels of arsenic, cadmium, and lead in almost half, including some marketed to children. Cheaper juices are often made from concentrate, with less transparency about sourcing.

Makeup and Skincare

Ricca recommends skipping generic cosmetics at dollar stores, which she says are more likely to contain low-quality or even hazardous ingredients. They also lack the accountability of name brands. A yearlong study by the Campaign for Healthier Solutions, published in 2025, found several dollar store personal care products with ingredients linked to health concerns. Ricca suggests low-cost name brands like E.l.f., Nyx, and Wet N Wild, found at drugstores.

Toys That Don’t Last

Cheap toys are often poorly made and break easily, says Andrea Woroch, a consumer savings adviser in Bakersfield, California, sometimes leaving behind small pieces that can be dangerous for little kids. Unbranded toys may also fall short of current safety regulations. Woroch suggests waiting for holiday sales or checking online marketplaces and resale stores for gently used options. Clearance aisles at retail stores are another option.

Where the Dollar Store Still Wins

None of this means writing off the dollar store. As Trae Bodge, a shopping strategist at TrueTrae.com, puts it, “There are some categories to definitely go for but others to avoid.” Gift wrap, glassware, and coloring books, for example, made the buy list at Wise Bread. Cheap makes sense when the item holds up, and for the items on this list, the better value may sit on another shelf.
