Flip phones got people used to folding phones. Apple’s first foldable, the iPhone Duo, opens into a small tablet and still slips into a pocket. It arrives this month at $1,999, and the appeal is easy to see if you carry a tablet around just for reading or video. Whether it is worth the money is a harder call, and it comes down to a few trade-offs.
Two Screens, One Phone

The iPhone Duo has a 5.4-inch outer display for messages, navigation, and everyday tasks. Unfold it, and a 7.6-inch screen opens, with more room for documents, websites, and apps. Both panels support ProMotion refresh rates up to 120Hz and peak outdoor brightness of up to 3,000 nits, according to Apple. The passport design opens like a book, and the outer screen stays usable whether the phone is open or closed.
Learning From Everyone Else

Apple arrived late, since Samsung, Huawei and Google had already done much of the refining. That gave it time to learn, and the display shows it with a matte, nano-textured finish. CNET’s Abrar Al-Heeti said it feels satisfying and makes the crease nearly vanish when the screen is on, though long-term testing is still ahead. The Duo is Apple’s thinnest phone ever, at 5.2mm open and 11.3mm closed.
A Rough Start for Foldables

Foldables have a history of rough starts. When reviewers tested Samsung’s first Galaxy Fold in 2019, its inner display turned out to be plastic softer than glass, prone to creases, dents, and air gaps. CNET’s Jessica Dolcourt wrote that a foldable is only as good as its screen. The Fold fell short. Owners who peeled off a thin film layer unknowingly raised their odds of damage, Andrew Lanxton noted.
Apple Has Had Its Moments Too

Apple’s own launches have not been spotless. In 2014, a few customers found that their iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus had bent after sitting in a pocket, an occurrence Apple called extremely rare. More recently, Apple rushed out a software fix for a bug that made the then-new iPhone 15 Pro overheat. Still, no lab can anticipate every real-life scenario, and a new design has more to prove.
Built Tough, but Unproven

Apple gave the Duo a Grade 5 titanium enclosure, a precision hinge, and Ceramic Shield 2 over the outer display, which the company says resists scratches three times better than its predecessor. The phone also carries an IP68 rating for water and dust. None of that settles long-term hinge reliability, though. Buyers should look into repair pricing and protection plans before ordering, since replacing a damaged folding display could get costly.
Multitasking on a Phone

The Duo ships with iOS 27.1, which adapts to the folding design. Split View lets you run two apps at once, so you can check a calendar while reading email or keep notes open next to a document. Apple has updated its developer tools for the larger display, but third-party support may vary. If a productivity app matters to you, check that it works well on the big screen first.
What the Battery Numbers Mean

Apple estimated up to 44 hours of video playback on the outer display and 31 hours on the larger inner screen, and The Gadgeteer reported typical use at up to 24 hours. Those are manufacturer figures, so gaming, navigation, and brightness will all shift real-world results. The big screen is the main draw and the bigger power drain. Apple claims about 50% charge in 20 minutes with a 60W or higher USB-C adapter.
A Camera Compromise

The Duo has a 48MP main camera and a 48MP ultrawide, plus an optical-quality 2x zoom from the main sensor instead of a separate telephoto lens. The iPhone 18 Pro has a dedicated 4x telephoto, handy for concerts or wildlife. Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman wrote in August that skipping a telephoto could cost Apple some sales. Apple’s Duo Preview feature lets subjects see themselves on the outer display during a shot.
Who Should Wait

Storage starts at 256GB and tops out at 2TB. Touch ID in the side button replaces Face ID, and the Duo Case at $79 or Folio with Kickstand at $129 adds to the bill. The iPhone 18 Pro and 18 Pro Max both cost less, CNET noted. For people who regularly swap between phone and tablet, the Duo makes a case for itself; for everyone else, there is no harm in waiting.
