Netflix paid a pretty penny to have Will Smith’s newest blockbuster, and now the trailer for ‘Bright’ is here.
In a supposed bidding-war, Netflix reportedly paid over $90 million for the new Will Smith movie. Bright features Smith as a police officer fighting different non-earthly creatures.
The teaser leaves a lot to the imagination, not giving too much away about the movie and especially not the plot. We still get to see some of the potential protagonists and villains, who are quite clearly non-human.
Just because Netflix won the bid for this new cop thriller, doesn’t mean that the movie will skip the theaters all together. According to Business Insider Bright will still be in some theaters:
Netflix’s commitment to “day-and-date releases,” meaning movies are available to stream on Netflix the same day they arrive in theaters, will likely limit how many big screens show “Bright.”
With Netflix winning Bright, this may mean that they will try and bid on other potential big blockbusters. Depending on how the releases are planned, it will set a precedent for how other big Netflix movies are dealt with.
For the release set sometime this year, it will be interesting to see if Netflix releases more in-depth trailers for this new Smith film.
Business Insider also says that getting a film like Bright allows Netflix to gain more subscriptions from people who are looking to see the film on the release day.
Netflix does have a lot of big blockbusters in their library, but they are often not added until months after their initially released into the theaters. Especially with a big-name like Smith, this could really drive people to the Netflix platform.
The Smith teaser for Bright is below.
With Netflix winning the bid for this film, and potentially restricting the theatrical releases, we will definitely begin to see a change when it comes to movie premieres.
