6. North Carolina Tar Heels (1990’s)
North Carolina has the most recognizable uniforms in college basketball. Their look is often imitated, but never duplicated. It’s not a coincidence two other jerseys on this list have their light blue as their primary color. Nike took the Tar Heels uniforms to the next level, taking over for them in the mid 1990’s.
Recently, North Carolina went back to this look, but with some subtle changes. The current look is very nice, but the uniforms are better off without them. Obviously, the biggest thing about these jerseys are the side diamonds. Back in the 1990’s, this was very innovative. At first, it looked weird. However, after the shock of it was gone, fans loved the look. The current look features more of an argyle pattern. It’s very nice, but it’s not nearly as fresh and clean as the diamonds look.
The top is the most famous in all of college basketball. It features two lines of text that say North Carolina. Between them are the jersey numbers. A subtle part of this uniform is the striped lining. You barely notice it, but once you do, it ties together the top and makes it elite.
Unfortunately, the Tar Heels introduced these after their glory days of Michael Jordan and James Worthy. Imagine if they were busting out the diamonds for those guys. Luckily, North Carolina added the baggier shorts to this look. This is the look that put the Tar Heels on the map. To this day, no college basketball team has put up a jersey like this one.
