3. Ohio State 1916 Throwbacks (2016)
The Ohio State Buckeyes have a history of mediocre alternate jerseys. Despite having one of the best color schemes in all of sports, they’ve come up with some terrible third jerseys. Needing a strong alternate jersey for 2016, Nike and the Buckeyes went back to their roots. Against Nebraska, Ohio State ran out with 1916 throwbacks jerseys. They were flawlessly done.
This isn’t to say the Buckeyes don’t already have great jerseys. Their home jersey is one of the best in NCAA football. But these alternates are so darn good they should wear them at least twice a year. Maybe even three times.
The top features the typical Ohio State dark red, but with a quintet of grey vertical stripes adorning the chest. When fans first heard of the concept, it probably sounded terrible. But public opinion quickly changed once the Buckeyes sprinted out of the tunnel against Nebraska. Their pants match the stripes. This jersey really brings out how amazing Ohio State grey is. It’s such an underrated color and it’s terrific it got its moment of glory as a featured color.
However, the best part of the jersey is without question the helmet. It has the appearance of a cannon ball and it’s such a clean look. The helmet almost has a futuristic style look and, you guessed it, it’s grey.
Nike hit a grand slam with these alternate jerseys. Hopefully they bust these out more often because if Pittsburgh Steelers fans love the infamous bumble bee jerseys, a throwback jersey that is actually appealing to the eyes should sell very well.
