Sadly this jersey is just an alternate. Because it deserves to be worn every week. Nike changed up a traditional look and made it sleek. The Navy Midshipmen wore this jersey against Army in the 2013 Army versus Navy rivalry game. While the Black Knights had some terrific uniforms for that game (also designed by Nike), Navy’s were better.
It all starts with the helmet. This couldn’t be more different than their traditional look. It’s usually smart to stick with tradition, but Navy got helmets which paid tribute to their roots. The anchor logo is great and the sleek, modern color scheme really ties it all together. In particular, the gold goes very well with the navy blue. My only complaint is there’s too much white. Why not go with more blue and make the gold pop even more?
The uniforms, unlike the helmet, didn’t get a huge change. But the subtle changes make the uniform look beautiful. For example, the lettering is larger, making the white pop a bit more than it usually does. It’s so old school, but it works perfectly. The gold trim is nice too. In fact, the uniform should have more of it. Why not add it as a number outline?
It’s hard to see in this photo, but there’s also a left breast logo which features an old school Navy logo. The Midshipmen usually stick with the classic look with the subtle improvements Nike has made. But they went bold here and hit a grand slam.
