The Arizona Wildcats have pulled off this look for over a decade. However, they were never more popular than they were in 1997 after winning the national title. Every kid watching saw the best shorts ever and wanted a pair. If you grew up in the 90’s, you begged your parents for a pair or you saved up your allowance for weeks on end.
Arizona rocked shorts with “cats” down the right side. It was the first time a mainstream team wore their name on their shorts. The left side featured a basketball logo which was also the definition of cool back in the 1990’s. Then again, Rico Suave and Vanilla Ice were also cool in the 1990’s, so maybe there’s a reason this fad didn’t catch on to other teams. What really made the shorts amazing were the stripes. The shorts had both vertical and horizontal stripes. They were all the rage.
The jersey tops were also nice. They featured your standard lettering with red. Against a navy blue background, the white outline of the lettering popped. The color scheme was perfectly pulled off. Having a lot of success certainly helped one of Nike’s greatest ideas take off in popularity. The uniforms have undergone change since then, but the shorts have been a huge part of their look for the better part of the last 20 years. Other teams haven’t followed suit, but maybe it’s for the best. After all, the “cats” on their shorts are an endearing trait for Arizona’s basketball team.
