Maine: Sea Dog Brewing Company, Sea Dog Sunfish Ale

The cold, rough waters off the coast of Maine can be harsh yet bountiful. The delicious Maine lobsters dipped in clarified butter can make your mouth water. If not an entire lobster, the iconic lobster rolls, with chunks of claw meat and buttery rolls, can make almost anyone break her diet. When thinking about this area, a brewery with a seafaring history comes to mind, the Sea Dog Brewing Company.

The Sea Dog Brewing Company was established in 1993 on the coast of Maine. The brewery’s beers try to capture the seafaring way of life. While only a few have truly experienced the sea-faring history for themselves, these well-crafted beers can make you dream of a life on the open waters.

Most of the Sea Dog Brewing Company’s beers are created in the traditional English style. Using English malted barley and British yeast, the resulting flavors are quite distinguishing from other beers. These beers are often described as crisp and refreshing. After a long day at sea, any boatman would want a beer to quench his thirst.

Sea Dog Brewery has a sea dog that adorns its namesake brews. The dog was named Barney. He was the brewmaster’s apprentice and the company’s figurehead. If you are walking through a beer aisle, you can always spot the sea faring dog on the label.

One beer to try is the Sea Dog Sunfish Ale. This wheat beer offer flavors of peach and grapefruit. While a wheat beer, the beer isn’t too filling (not like eating a loaf of bread). The light and fruity characteristics work well with salads and poultry. Another great pairing is summer fruit desserts, like peach cobbler.

Sea Dog Brewery beers are widely available.
