When a beer comes with a slogan, “Hi, Neighbor, have Gansett!” how could you not want to open a cold one. Narragansett is the oldest brewery in Rhode Island. Founded in 1980, the brewery was considered the number one selling Rhode Island beer. Over the years, the brewery has relinquished the ranking, but it still maintains its welcoming persona.
Narragansett became popular when Red Sox announcer Curt Gowdy uttered the famous neighbor slogan. The campaign appealed to the every man who enjoyed a cold beer and a good game of baseball. As a Red Sox sponsor, the Narragansett Lager featured predominately in the games. The announcers would comment on the taste. Brewing style and overall great taste. When Narragansett lost its Red Sox sponsorship, the company saw a decline in sales.
Today, Narragansett Lager is making a comeback. With people looking for nostalgic beers, the classic, simple Narragansett Lager fills the need. Recent marketing campaigns brought a can that was featured in Jaws. With thoughtful social media tags, like #CrushtheCan, the beer found a new audience.
According to Narragansett, the lager is consider to have “more flavor than other premium lagers.” While this statement can be debated, this lager is a good any occasion beer. Like in years past, drinking a few at a baseball game or on a boat is quite refreshing. The beer is inviting, welcoming and easy going. Just like a good neighbor.
