Nebraska: Brickway Brewery and Distillery, Hef

Nebraska is the cornhusker state. Nestled in the middle of the United States, some people may overlook this Great Plains state. Maybe the vision of rows and rows of corn could cloud a view. But the Oracle of Omaha, Warren Buffet calls this state home. So the state must have something to offer.

For this list, the focus is beer. Maybe, one of the reasons that people over look Nebraska is the unfounded thought that there is no good beer to be drunk in the state. Luckily Brickway Brewery offers some delicious brews in the heart of historic Omaha.

Brickway Brewery and Distillery is the first post-prohibition brewery in the state of Nebraska. Located in the historic Old Market area, the brewery captures some of the old time feel of the area. The iconic brick paved streets are from the turn of the century. The look recalls images of horse drawn carriages and a simpler time. Today, the area is home to restaurants, art galleries and, of course, the Brickway Brewery.

The brewery makes all its beers on premises. With three different types of series, Brickway Brewery offers a beer for many occasions. The brewery describes its session series beers as that you could drink more than one per session. These beers aren’t those slow sipping, end of the evening beers. One to try is the Hef.

A classic German Hefeweizen, this beer has some wheat undertones but isn’t overly bready. The unique additions of banana and clove make for a different flavor combination. On a warm summer day this beer is quite refreshing.

One fun event hosted by Brickway Brewery is the Beer Amnesty Week. During this celebration, people are encouraged to bring their boring, bad beer (think mass produced light beers) to the brewery. The bad beers are exchanged for something the brewery produces. Not sure what they do with all the “bad” beer but it’s a fun promotion.
