Carrying the Czech Beer label requires the use of specific types of Czech-grown barley and hops that give the domestic brew its characteristic bitterness, aroma and drinkability, said Vladimir Balach, the head of the Czech Beer and Malt Association in a 2014 interview. California: Sierra Nevada, Pale Ale

When thinking of Northern California, wine country is often the predominant liquor industry that comes to mind. Napa, Sonoma and the numerous vineyards in the valleys are popular stops for a weekend of libations. But Chico, California is the stop for beer drinkers since it is the home to Sierra Nevada.

Founded in 1979, Sierra Nevada has earned its place in the beer industry. Regarded as the second best-selling craft beer in history and considered the seventh largest brewing company in the US, Sierra Nevada has large name recognition.

The first beer that Sierra Nevada brewed was the iconic Pale Ale. Over the years, the company has expanded to numerous beers. From limited releases, seasonal specialties and year round favorites, the brewery has a beverage for everyone’s palate.

In addition to its quest to make quality beers, the company is committed to environmental causes. In 2010, the company was awarded the EPA’s “Green Business of the Year.” The brewery employs solar power, reduces its carbon footprint and uses repurposed biodiesel in its delivery trucks.

While many of the brewery’s beers are quite refreshing, the iconic Pale Ale shouldn’t be overlooked. The company’s flagship, with the classic green label, has been the country’s best selling pale ale. The classic hoppy flavors is offset with malty notes and slightly citrus undertones. Even beer snobs can enjoy this approachable, widely available pale ale.

The Sierra Nevada Pale Ale is perfect for anytime sipping. Personally, I prefer this beer paired with lighter meals. Summer vegetables on the grill or some grilled chicken pairs wonderfully with the piney notes in the beer.

Sierra Nevada Pale Ale is available nationwide.
