Did you know that South Dakota actually has some craft beers made in the state? True, many South Dakotans are fine with the many fine imports that visit the Mount Rushmore state. Still, local breweries are starting to pop up along the Black Hills.
Since the South Dakota beer market is in its infancy, the beers that you find in the state are reality easy going. Very few of these beers will challenge your way of thinking about beer. Every once and a while you just need to drink a beer, not write a dissertation on it.
One South Dakota brewery to try is Crow Peak in Spearfish, South Dakota. Crow Peak offers two distinctions. First, it is South Dakota’s largest brewery. Second, it is the only South Dakota brewery that distributes out of the state. Several of the brewery’s year round flavors are available in cans.
If you find a Crow Peak beer or if you are in South Dakota, pour yourself a glass of the Pile O’ Dirt Porter. While dark in color, this beer has a medium body. With some chocolate flavors, the beer is a good alternative to a hoppy IPA. This beer is consider the brewery’s signature beer.
Also, Crow Peak teamed up with Leones’ Creamery to create an ice cream. The ice cream uses the Pile O’ Dirt porter. Maybe there’s an adult ice cream float option to be had.
