What beer or brewery represents your state?

Not a beer country until the arrival a decade ago of a central European tradition of sit-down bars that married brews with hearty meals, Russia is now reveling in the new craft labels that have exploded in popularity during the nation’s longest recession this century. Alaska: Anchorage Brewing Company, Galaxy White IPA

When I think about Alaska, a few things come to mind. From picturesque glaciers to soaring mountains, the Alaskan landscape fills my thoughts. The far Northern state still has many part to explore. With so many natural wonders throughout the landscape, the beer that I choose for the ‘Last Frontier” state is Anchorage Brewing Company’s Galaxy White IPA.

According to the Anchorage Brewing Company’s website, their philosophy is “WHERE BREWING IS AN ART & BRETTANOMYCES IS KING!” First, let’s define brettanomyces because that word is quite intimidating, Brettanomyces is a particular strain of yeast. Often breweries avoid this yeast strain because it can create a “funky” beer. When used correctly, this yeast can create an almost wine-like or barrel infused final product.

Anchorage Brewing Company uses brettanomyces in many of its beers. The brewery focuses on Belgium influenced beers, like a Saison or Triple. Using this strain of yeast helps to create beers that have a depth of flavor and are meant to be savored.

For this conversation of 50 beers, 50 states, I chose the Galaxy White IPA. A white IPA isn’t a common beer. Since Alaska is the country’s “last frontier,” why not challenge a few beer drinkers out there. According to the brewery, the Galaxy White IPA uses “fresh kumquats, Indian coriander, and black peppercorns.” Referencing early explorers, the unusual ingredients and spices add to the unique taste of this beer.

The Galaxy White IPA contains 7% ALC /VOL, 50 IBU’s. Check the company’s website for local vendor availability.
