Texas: Spoetzle Brewery, Shiner Bock
Do you know the name Spoetzle Brewery? Probably not, but I’m willing to bet that you know the name Shiner Bock. The oldest independent brewery in Texas, Spoetzle Brewery, located in Shiner, Texas, is the maker of Shiner beer. The company’s iconic Shiner Bock is the brewery’s most popular beer.
The Spoetzle Brewery was founded because local German and Czech immigrants couldn’t find the bees of their homeland in Texas. Without a beer to drink, the local decided to brew their own beer. Now, the brewery makes a wide variety of beers.
Now available year round, Shiner Bock wasn’t always available 365 days a year. The company’s flagship beer was considered a Lenten beer. This bock beer would only be available during that specific season.
According to the brewery, Shiner Bock represents almost ¾ of the company’s production. The beer is an American style dark larger. The beer is made with German specialty hops. Even though dark in color, the beer is quite smooth and easy to drink. The company’s website says this beer “pairs nicely with porch sitting, washer tossing and dog petting.”
While the brewery’s assessment is quite amusing, and on point, Shiner Bock is delicious with Texas barbecue. A slow, smoke Texas brisket, smoked sausage or even some smoked chicken taste even better with a cold Shiner Bock.
Shiner Bock by Spoetzle Brewery is available in most major markets.
