Mississippi: Lazy Magnolia Brewery, Southern Pecan Beer
Don’t debate a Southern over the better pronunciation of pecan. But you can enjoy a cold glass of Southern Pecan Beer by Lazy Magnolia Brewery together.
Mississippi’s oldest brewery, the Lazy Magnolia Brewery is the state’s first package brewery since the 1920s. Founded by Mark and Leslie Henderson, this brewery sought to capitalize Southern traditions and unique flavor combinations. The operation started small, but has grown into a popular line of beers in Southern states.
Lazy Magnolia Brewery’s best known beer is Southern Pecan Beer. The idea for this beer came from its founder. Previously, nuts in beer seemed an unlikely proposition. Nuts contain a lot of oil and the oil is usually released when ground. The belief was that nuts in a beer recipe would be too oily.
Through trial and error, the Lazy Magnolia Brewery founders created a recipe that took advantage of the oil in pecans. During recipe creation, the founders determined that the extra oil actually helped the yeast. The resulting beer was quite delicious. Southern Pecan Beer is the first commercial nut beer.
Lazy Magnolia Brewery’s Southern Pecan Beer uses whole roasted pecans. The beer has a robust, nutty flavor. The dark mahogany color showcases the caramel and malt notes in the beer. This beer is truly different and should be tried at least once.
Lazy Magnolia Brewery beers are available in select Southern states.
