Ohio: Great Lakes Brewing Co, Eliot Ness Amber Lager
In the past several years, the number of craft breweries in Ohio has more than doubled. Even with the influx of new entities, there is a commonality between all of them. The Ohio breweries emphasize sustainability. Some breweries re-purpose old buildings instead of building new. From water stewardship to farming to reusing waste products, the breweries care as much for the environment as the beer that they create.
Great Lakes Brewing Co has strong ties to the community where it is located. Thinking that the city needed a little boost, Great Lakes Brewing Co opened its brewery that would create beers they enjoyed. Creating beers in a European style, the beers are quite drinkable by beer lovers and the occasional drinker.
The fun part of the Great Lakes Brewing Co’s beers is the beers’ names. For example, one of the breweries most popular beers is the Elliot Ness Amber Lager. Elliot Ness was a prohibition officer. He was part of the dark time in the United States where alcohol was illegal. According to the brewery website, Elliot Ness frequented the tavern that is now part of the company’s brewpub.
The Elliot Ness Amber Lager by Great Lakes Brewing Co has won many awards. With a tongue and cheek attitude, the brewery describes this beer as “arresting.” The smooth beer is darker, but not overpowering. The beer offers a few toffee notes that adds to its sweetness, but they aren’t overpowering. Pair this beer with a braised meat or hearty stew to balance out the flavor.
