3. Leveling up
We’ve already discussed how to efficiently level up with Lucky Eggs, and when certain items unlock, but now it’s time to get into some serious numbers. To level up, you need XP, and you can get XP by any number of methods.
Here’s the rundown of how much XP you get from certain actions, courtesy of Serebii.net and its fantastic database:
- Capture a Pokemon: 100 XP
- Curveball: +10 XP
- Nice throw: +10 XP
- Great throw: +50 XP
- Excellent throw: +100 XP
- Note that you can only get one of the three bonuses alongside the Curveball bonus. That is, you can’t have both a Nice and Excellent throw bonus.
- Hatching a Pokemon out of a 2 km Egg: 200 XP
- 5 km Egg: 500 XP
- 10 km Egg: 1000 XP
- Evolve a Pokemon: 500 XP
- Register a new Pokemon: 500 XP
- Visit a PokeStop: 50 XP
- If you get more than 6 items: 100 XP
- Defeat a Pokemon while training at a Team-affiliated Gym: 10 XP
- Defeat a Pokemon at a Gym: 100 XP
- Sweep all of a Gym’s Pokemon: 50 XP
Though it initially takes just a few thousand XP to level up, by the time you reach the mid-30’s, you need millions of XP. Getting to level 40 requires 5 million XP on top of what you’ve already earned. Hopefully you have plenty of Gyms nearby and Lucky Eggs to double your XP.
